FROM SKETCH TO STAGE: UNVEILING TECHNICAL PROCESS FOR AMERIKIN
Today we’re taking a look at some of the great work in process by two of our designers for Amerikin: Victoria “Kermit” Mearnini, costume designer, and Alan Costa, set designer. This is Victoria’s first time working with SOTP, and she came out of the gate swinging for the fences. From our initial World of the Play exploration, Victoria had generated an entire collage of wide-ranging inspirations. She made quick work observing the cast and developing renderings that blended the aspects of the individuals and the essence of the characters on the page. Below are some of her renderings and a part of her collage work.

Al returns to SOTP after having collaborated with the company as the set designer of Bach at Leipzig last season. Within the LatinUs theatre at the Pivot Center on W. 25th Street, Al’s been hard at work designing the domestic Browning homestead while anchoring it within the Sharpsburg, MD community. Amerikin presents dual challenges of placing a lot of realistic/naturalistic action and scene work within a modest house, but then creates opportunities for less realistic and non-linear storytelling. Al meets both challenges in his design by creating the blueprint for the tangible world and open space for more expressive explorations.
