FROM SELF-PRODUCING TO THEATRE PRODUCTION: BY KADIJAH WINGO, ENSEMBLE MEMBER

Transitioning from a solitary world of acting and stand-up comedy to the collaborative realm of theatre production has been a profoundly eye-opening journey. I’ve discovered that effective collaboration is not just a component of successful production—it is its very essence.

In the past, my creative process was largely internal. Ideas would germinate in my head or were scribbled in journals, often erupting into semi-spontaneous performances on stage. This solitary process could feel exhilarating but also isolating, and I now understand how it can drive a person mad in its repetitiveness.

Becoming a producer has transformed my approach to creativity. I’ve learned to be more vocal and generous with my ideas, releasing them from the confines of my mind and letting them flourish in the minds and hearts of others. This shift from hoarding ideas to sharing them has been liberating.

The logistical side of production—planning dates, times, and locations—has its challenges, but I’m finding joy in forging connections and aligning with others who are also passionate. This alignment brings a refreshing sense of unity and purpose that was missing in my previous work.

This new role has also revealed how certain habits I once thought were integral to my persona were actually just barriers to living fully and boldly. Embracing production has encouraged me to respond quickly, assert my boundaries, and communicate my truth more effectively. It’s easier to advocate for others than to stand up for myself alone, and having less time to sugarcoat things has honed my ability to make swift, decisive pivots.

I’m also becoming more attuned to the dynamics of give and take, recognizing the signs of those who are more interested in taking than contributing. The satisfaction of helping other artists see their dreams come true is profoundly fulfilling—like being a creative fairy godmother who plays a part in the journey of their magical creations.

Through this transition, I’ve surprised myself with the depth of my creativity and the significance of my role in supporting and nurturing the creative visions of others. This new chapter has been a transformative experience, showing me the power of collaboration and the joy of shared artistic endeavors.
